How to Repair a Door Ding or Minor Dent Repair Tips

You’ve parked your car in a parking lot. When you get back to your car, you notice a door ding. A moment of anxiety follows. You take pride in maintaining the appearance of your vehicle. What should you do?

You have two choices. You can either take your vehicle to an expert like the Salisbury collision repair shop or you can try to remove the ding yourself. We’ll go over a few ways to attempt to do it yourself. The methods listed below may not work on every vehicle. We should mention here that if it messes up, we’re not responsible for the results.

A plunger can be useful for taking out a small or medium-size dent. Get a cup plunger, splash some water on it and wet down the dent. Next, try to pop the dent with the plunger.

Boiling Water

Taking a dent out of a bumper may be difficult because the plastic is stiff. With this method, you throw some boiling water on the dent and then push out the dent from behind the bumper. You’ll have to be quick, because the bumper will cool down quickly.

Hair Dryer and Compressed Air

Heat the dent with a hair dryer set at its hottest setting. This will cause the plastic of the car to expand. Once it’s good and hot, turn a can of compressed air upside-down and spray the dent. The cold air will cause the dent to pop out. You might want to handle the compressed air with gloves, as the can will get very cold.

Dry Ice

Wearing protective gloves, hold a piece of dry ice against the dent and slide it around until the dent pops out. Reapply if necessary. You can also heat the dent first, using a hair dryer.

Vacuum Cleaner and Pot

This method uses suction to remove the dent. You’ll need a vacuum cleaner, a pot or a bucket, and some tape. Make a small hole in the bottom of the pot. Tape the other end of the pot around the dent. Position the vacuum cleaner hose over the hole in the pot. Turn on the vacuum cleaner. This should pop out the dent.

A Store-Bought Tool

There are a number of dent removal tools available in stores and online. We don’t endorse any of them, but this solution might be worth a try. If you’re buying online, read some reviews and see if others have had success.

Keep in mind that any of these methods may make things worse. If you’d rather not mess with home dent repair, or if you’ve already tried one or more of these methods without any success, bring your car to a qualified collision repair shop like Team Chevy Collision. They have the knowledge and experience to fix your door ding and get your car looking like new. Yes, it will cost more than using a vacuum cleaner and a pot, but you’ll know your vehicle is in the hands of an experienced professional who has the knowledge and the tools to do the job properly.
